About the group
The academic environment at The Faculty of Law has been interested in punishment from various theoretical and empirical perspectives, combining strong legal and social science disciplines.
One purpose of the research group has been to establish an interdisciplinary forum across the institutes at the faculty. Another aim has been to foster connections between researchers and the practical field.
The research group consists of staff members from the faculty’s institutes and centers, as well as several external members with practical experience from the field.
Areas of interest
- Criminal law and punishment practices
- Legitimacy of punishment: Normative and empirical studies of views on punishment, criminalization, and legislative processes at both the national and international levels. The possibilities and limitations of legitimate state power in practice.
- Everyday sociology of punishment: The implementation of punishment in practice, daily life in prisons, and the experiences of inmates and staff.
- Punishment and globalization processes: The nation-state's management of foreign prison staff and the emergence of international criminal law and international assistance for rule-of-law development.
- Various forms of punishment: In addition to prison sentences, other criminal law sanctions such as fines and community service, as well as "punitive" phenomena from areas such as immigration law and administrative law.
