VELDOK Documentation of fish welfare in the development of new technology

Duration
09.09.2024–04.09.2026

The University of Oslo, represented by NIFS, is a partner in the VELDOK project coordinated by Nofima.

Whether it concerns delousing units, production systems, fish pumps, or other technologies, legislation requires that equipment used on animals safeguards their welfare.

Annichen Sæteren contributes to the work package on legislation and current practices.

This work package will examine the boundaries set by the Animal Welfare Act and related legal sources for the use of technology in aquaculture, as well as the systems in place for enforcing these boundaries. The study will assess how legal protection differs between fish defined as experimental animals and other fish. It will also consider whether different rules apply to established technologies versus those under development.

The work package will further summarize administrative practices related to the documentation of fish welfare during the development of new technologies and methods. In addition, the project will collect and systematize experiences from previous development processes. This will be supplemented with qualitative insights into opportunities and barriers for best-practice methodologies in technology development.
