Violence and Punishment in China. A Scenario
Dr. Børge Bakken from Hong Kong University visits the China Programme in August. Professor Professor Bakken is an expert on crime and penalty in China.
On August 15 Dr. Bakken will hold a lecture on Violence and Punishment in China. A Scenario.
Mainstream modernization theory claims that modern societies change from violent to thieving societies. In China I see another sceanrio unfold towards 2020. There are many signs that violence and brutalization will increase rather than decrease. Despite official statistics showing a fall in violence, a closer look does not confirm this trend. Stranger homicide is particularly high in Chinese cities, and the execution rates are the highest in the world despite recent claims of overall reduction.
Dr. Bakken will also present new data on executions in China and attitudes towards the death penalty.
Time: 15 August, 14:00-15.30
