Academic interests

Sveinung Sandbergs research focuses on processes of marginalization, violence, masculinity, illegal drugs, radicalization and social movements. Theoretically he has published widely on the concept of street capital that introduces Pierre Bourdieu’s theories to the study of street culture (e.g. the book Street Capital: Black cannabis dealers in a white welfare state). He has also studied contemporary cannabis use, rituals, symbolic and narratives (e.g. the book Cannabiskultur). This research takes on the dominating thesis of normalization, and reconceptualises the traditional notion of subculture.

The last decade he has also been in the forefront of narrative criminology (e.g. the edited volume Narrative Criminology: Understanding stories of crime and The Emerald Handbook of narrative criminology), introducing and using linguistics, narratology etc. to studies of crime and the criminal justice system. In his own empirical work, he has used narrative criminology to study different phenomenon, such as drug dealing and smuggling in, cannabis and psychedelics use, binge drinking, jihadi and right-wing radicalization and terrorism, developments in crime during the pandemic, and prisons in Mexico.

In 2021 Sandberg finished a large externally funded research project "Radicalization and Resistance" about Islam and religious extremism. The project explores the relationship between everyday Islam and religious extremism as well as between street culture and extremist organisations and rhetoric. This project combines sociology of religion with social movement and ethnic studies and expands beyond the traditional boundaries of criminology. It also promotes new forms of academic dissemination such as videos and advances progressive forms of team writing

The same year he also started a new research project "Crime in Latin America" (CRIMLA). As part of this research, a large research team are collecting life-story interviews with prisoners in six different Latin American countries. The interests of the project include understanding the role of family, employment, culture and the State in criminal trajectories and careers. The role of life-stories for crime is also a core interest in the project.
