  Mange etniske minoriteter opplever rasisme som et stort problem i Norge. Dette gjelder spesielt mikroaggresjoner basert på kulturelle forestillinger om at «det norske» er overlegent. I denne artikkelen beskriver vi ulike former for rasisme og legger vekt på hvordan disse ble motarbeidet gjennom det vi kaller hverdagsmotstand. Studien er basert på 41 kvalitative intervjuer med personer med minoritetsbakgrunn, hovedsakelig svarte, som deltok i Black Lives Matter-demonstrasjonene i Norge. Fem former for hverdagsrasisme var spesielt framtredende: skjellsord og nedsettende ytringer, forskjellsbehandling og diskriminering, antakelser om ikke å være «norsk», antakelser om lav sosial status og fordomsfull inkludering. Dette var i hovedsak mikroaggresjoner som fant sted i hverdagslig sosial samhandling. De fem vanligste reaksjonene på rasisme var forsøk på å motvirke den ved å ignorere, konfrontere, dele erfaringer, rapportere og demonstrere. Studien viser hvor sentralt det hverdagslige er for å forstå etniske minoriteters opplevelser av rasisme – og motstand. Vi argumenterer for at denne typen hverdagsmotstand, er viktigere enn både politisk protest og formelle rapporteringer. Dette er fordi hverdagen har en regelmessighet og kontinuerlig tilstedeværelse som andre former for motstand mangler. Minoriteter i Norge opplever mye hets og forskjellsbehandling, men de er ikke passive ofre. Denne studien viser hvordan de aktivt forhandler, håndterer og kjemper mot rasisme.

  Life-stories emerge from a wide variety of facts and events in individual lives and weave a selected few of these together to make meaning in the present. They are crucial for constructing identity and influence action by establishing worldviews and a persona that narrators will seek to confirm. In this study we describe three main themes in the life-stories of six incarcerated men in Argentina: a) Protecting family, especially parents; b) reconstructing an ideal past, and contrasting it with a more cynical present; and c) blaming criminal neighborhoods, friends, and girlfriends for their crimes. We discuss how these themes are intertwined, what function they fulfill, and the identities and masculinities they produce. Combining research on life-stories with narrative and psychosocial criminology the analysis reveals how life-stories of incarcerated men can be seen as attempts at countering stigma and defending a self that is under attack. The life-stories portray a believable, ‘good’, and multifaceted image of the self, but most importantly, create coherence and unity in otherwise chaotic lives.

  Violence is central to social life, especially for people at the margins of urban society. This article examines ethnographic data collected in Oslo among individuals who are involved in street life and crime. We propose the following typology for understanding violence in this population: respect-based violence, business violence, drunken violence, and family violence. We argue that from an emic perspective, these types are substantially different from one another and evoke varying moral evaluations. Violence that has to do with respect, business, or drinking tends to be tolerated, sometimes even celebrated, whereas family violence tends to be condemned. Violence is not a uniform phenomenon. It comes in different types and is experienced and made sense of differently across cultural contexts. These findings challenge a dominating trend in contemporary micro-sociology, spearheaded by Randall Collins, which focuses on identifying universal rules of violent situations at the expense of sensitivity to cultural variation.

  For over a decade, jihadi terrorism in Europe, and the recruitment of Europeans to fight for ISIS in Syria, have increasingly involved marginalized youths from a social context of street culture, illegal drug use and crime. Existing theoretical models of the crime-terrorism nexus and radicalization arguably do not sufficiently explain the fluid and dynamic ways by which the street cultural come to be politico-religiously violent. This paper provides a novel retheorization, the street-jihadi spectrum, which is better placed to explain a wide range of behaviours, from the merely stylistic to the spectacularly violent. On the street culture end it includes subcultural play with provocative jihadi symbols and on the jihadi end the terrorism of ‘gangster-jihadists’. We emphasize that the spectrum, consisting of a multitude of confluences of street and jihadi cultures, also includes resistance to jihadism.

  We study the emergence of new forms of law violations in Latin America during the coronavirus pandemic. Based on data from online news articles, we construct a typology of “new” crimes: (1) hate or fear crimes against health workers and hospitals; (2) illegal denials of public mobility out of fear of infection; (3) looting and other traditional crimes justified by the pandemic; and (4) violations of pandemic regulations. Studies of crime during the pandemic have focused on traditional crime and have been based on rational choice theory and a routine activities approach. We argue that in order to understand the recent crime trends in Latin America, these must be accompanied by other theories of crime, together with a better understanding of the role of the State. Our typology can be a starting point for discussions and further research on the complex relationship between criminal behavior and policy responses in pandemics.

  This study aims to understand why people agree to participate in qualitative research. While some studies have emphasized the motivation to participate in research, the nuances and underlying stories that favor participation have not yet been examined. Using data from repeated biographical open-ended interviews with men and women convicted of violent crimes in Argentina and Chile, we distinguish between stories emphasizing the interviews as a space or opportunity for a) healing and self-improvement, b) venting emotions, c) presenting alternative stories, and d) creating individual or systemic change. We also discuss stories that indicate a different direction, namely e) skepticism regarding research participation. The stories are discussed in view of self-presentations, the prison context, and issues of consent. Our study underscores the importance of critically exploring widespread narratives about the benefits of qualitative interviews. Understanding the stories that encourage or discourage participation in research allows for a more nuanced comprehension of the recruitment processes, consent to participate, and the qualitative interview dynamics.

  Music is ubiquitous in contemporary societies, and criminologists are paying increasing attention to it, asserting that it takes antisocial, prosocial and anti-establishment forms regarding criminality. Established approaches provide vital ways to understand the relationship of music and crime, but criminologists have yet to theorise the fluidity of music's roles for those who have committed criminalised acts. The life-story interviews we conducted with prisoners in Latin America reveal that music's role in people's lives changes over the course of their lives in complex ways. It also frames and influences the way they talk about their own histories. Informed by repeat interviews with four prisoners, we suggest including the concepts of life courses and life stories to facilitate understanding the complexity and multi-dimensionality of the relationship between crime and music. We also demonstrate and discuss how life courses and life stories are intertwined.

  Before being locked up, incarcerated women are more marginalized, have higher rates of mental illness and substance misuse, and have more often experienced physical or sexual victimization than incarcerated men. Women experience prison differently. However, much of what we know about women’s experiences comes from research in the United States and the United Kingdom, providing little insight into women prisoners’ experiences elsewhere. This is unfortunate for many reasons; policy makers wishing to develop evidence-based initiatives, for example, cannot know whether what seems to work in one place is appropriate in another. Case studies from Canada, Norway, and Mexico reveal similarities and substantial differences in women’s experiences. Incarcerated women in all three places have histories of victimization and identify their children as their primary motivator to desist from crime and drug use. However, how they relate to programming, prison work, accommodation, and prison food varies greatly. How women in these three different countries experience imprisonment is related to conditions of their lives outside of prison and to the nature, extent, and quality of available social welfare services. Researchers need to pay much closer attention to geographical and contextual differences when assessing the conditions, challenges, and prospects of women in prisons.

  Racial discrimination takes many forms and so does opposition to it. In contrast to the dominant emphasis on institutional or state efforts to counter racism, we examine how members of racially minoritized groups resist racism in their everyday lives. Drawing on 41 qualitative interviews with young, mainly Black, people in Norway, we identify five distinct ways in which they actively counter racism, as opposed to passively accepting or adapting to it. Participants resisted racism by ignoring, confronting, sharing experiences about, reporting and protesting it. Our analysis explicates the characteristics, potential outcomes, and social function of such resistance to racism. The study contributes to the literature on everyday racism and antiracism by making evident how those at the receiving end negotiate and actively oppose racist experiences.

  Symbolic boundaries are used for establishing narrative identities and have critical impact on behavior and interpersonal interactions. Using data from a photo-ethnography of people who use methamphetamine in Alabama we show how women use stories and images to draw symbolic boundaries between themselves and others. These boundaries made sense of their meth use, but also guided behavior, controlled drug use, and aided in negotiating personal relationships. Maintaining boundaries through stories and images is important for people with drug problems, as such boundaries provide self-worth and serve as ideals to be lived up to. Symbolic boundaries can thus reduce harmful drug use and be an important means for exercising control and agency at the margins of society.

  In the spring of 2020, the Black Lives Matter protests shook the Western world. Spreading from the USA, demonstrations diffused globally, especially to Europe, calling out racism in its different forms. Emotions ran high and were pivotal in igniting protests. The role of emotion in social movements has received renewed scholarly attention during the last decades. It plays an important role at every stage of protest, but few studies have traced its part in individuals’ shifting engagement over time. This study examines the role of emotion during the global wave of Black Lives Matter protests. Based on retrospective interviews with 38 participants in Black Lives Matter demonstrations in Norway, we identify the role of emotion before, during and after their participation. Our findings help explain how individual patterns of participation develop in the course of a wave of protest, and also provide insights into the consequences of the recent Black Lives Matter protests in Europe.

  This study examines early intervention against individual radicalization. The data originate from interviews with young Muslims in Norway who had experienced interventions related to their own radicalization, or engaged in or witnessed interventions directed at a radicalized peer or relative. We find that informal interventions by family and friends were most prevalent in the data and played the most decisive role in interrupting radicalization, while police interventions were less common and had mixed results. Interventions by family or peers often came early in the radicalization process, were employed by trusted “insiders”, and took place as part of everyday life, thus having less detrimental consequences for radicalized individuals. We finally discuss the challenges of combining interventions by family members and friends with involvements from the police and security service.

  Criminology have long celebrated the lone hero researcher. Doing and writing up research in solitude has been the key to academic success and institutional promotions. However, the social sciences in general have increasingly moved towards more collaborative ways of doing research, and co-authorship has become more common. In this study, we summarize and discuss the pros and cons of working in teams when doing qualitative research. Drawing upon our own experiences from Mexico and Norway, we argue for a radical approach to team research and co-authorship, which we describe as team writing. Most importantly, we suggest opening up to include stakeholders and community partners, thus challenging the borders between researchers and those researched. This is arguably particularly important for research done in the academic, geographical and topical periphery of criminology. Team research and writing answers some of the critique of power inequality, representativity and lack of diversity in contemporary academic research. We also believe that team research, and writing, can make criminological research more multifaceted, reflexive, and thus better.

  De siste ti til tjue årene har frykten for islam på mange måter erstattet tradisjonell rasisme i Norge (Bangstad & Døving, 2015). Muslimhat, hets og antiislamisme preger hverdagen til de rundt 200 000 norske muslimene her. Skjeve blikk på gata, fiendtlige kommentarer og mer formell diskriminering er uttrykk for skepsis og fordommer mot islam. Noen ganger får retorikken også mer alvorlige utslag. Antiislamistisk retorikk var bakgrunnen for det største terrorangrepet på norsk jord, i 2011 (Berntzen & Sandberg, 2014). Senest i 2019 var det et nytt forsøk på massedrap i Bærum, med muslimer som mål. Bare tilfeldigheter gjorde at angrepet ikke fikk et større omfang, som terrorangrepet 22. juli. I et stort forskningsprosjekt har vi intervjuet 90 norske muslimer i alderen 18–32 år. Med utgangspunkt i disse intervjuene gir vi en oversikt over unge muslimers opplevelser av muslimhets. Hatvold, netthets og diskriminering får mye oppmerksomhet i media. Men den mest utbredte hetsen unge muslimer opplever, den som preger hverdagen deres, er nedlatende kommentarer, negativt ladete spørsmål og skjellsord, både fra fremmede og fra bekjente. Det er få samfunnsforskere som har undersøkt reaksjonene på slike ubehagelige hendelser. Vi ser derfor på hvilke strategier unge muslimer har i møte med hat og stereotypier. I dette kapitlet spør vi hvilke former for muslimhets de opplever, og hva de gjør for å yte motstand mot hetsen og leve med den? Resultatene våre nyanserer og utfordrer bildet av det passive muslimske offeret som preger både den offentlige debatten og forskningen på muslimfiendtlighet.

  Research has shown widespread discrimination and hostility toward Muslims in Western countries. There is less knowledge of how Muslims resist, oppose, or challenge such behaviour. Based on in-depth interviews with 90 young Muslims in Norway, this study explores responses to anti-Muslim hostility. We describe a repertoire of everyday resistance: talking back, entering dialogue, living the example, denying significance, and talking down. The first three forms occur in face-to-face encounters while the latter two are retrospect sense-making of negative experiences. We conceptualise these responses as everyday resistance because they entail ways of actively countering anti-Muslim hostility, as opposed to passively accepting or adapting to it. This repertoire of everyday resistance can make it easier to avoid victimisation, protect religious identities, and ease the daily lives of young Muslims. Increased attention to narrative resistance in studies of everyday resistance will provide a better understanding of the many ways in which marginalised groups cope, resist, and struggle with their stigma.

  Risikoen for terrorangrep i Norge er stor. Det har skjedd før og vil høyst sannsynlig skje igjen. For å redusere terrortrusler og økt polarisering er store deler av det norske velferdssamfunnet involvert i forebygging. Lærere og politi, ansatte i NAV og PST, ungdomsarbeidere og trossamfunn – listen over sentrale aktører er lang. Samtidig er det stor usikkerhet knyttet til hva som kan utgjøre en trussel. I denne boka retter etablerte og nye forskere søkelyset mot hvordan norsk forebygging praktiseres. Hvem skal forebygge? Hva fungerer og hvorfor? Virker enkelte tiltak mot sin hensikt? Hvordan organiserer man best forebygging i en velferdsstat? Hva skal til for at mennesker forlater sin ekstremisme? Disse spørsmålene belyses gjennom erfaringer fra dem som skal iverksette forebyggende tiltak, og fra dem som er eller kan være i målgruppen for tiltakene. Det norske samfunnets ønske om å forebygge radikalisering og voldelig ekstremisme er større enn evnen. Når velferdsaktører forlater sine roller som hjelpere og tilretteleggere og i stedet kontrollerer og sender bekymringsmeldinger, er veien kort til stigmatisering og ekskludering. To skritt fram under forebyggingsfanen blir fort minst ett skritt tilbake. Forebygging av radikalisering og voldelig ekstremisme gir viktige bidrag til den offentlige samtalen om hvordan man bør forstå og innrette forebyggingen. Målet med boka er å belyse og styrke forebyggingen av radikalisering og voldelig ekstremisme.

  Abstract Introduction and AimsIn binge drinking' cultures, there is a strong association between alcohol consumption and violence. At the same time, several studies suggest that this link is cultural and contextual. We explore the role of alcohol in incidents of violence in nightlife settings. Design and MethodsWe used qualitative interviews with 104 Norwegians (52 men and 52 women, mean age 25years) who binge drink and party in nightlife settings. ResultsAlcohol both sparks and constrains violence in these contexts. When participants use alcohol, they expect conflicts to occur and blame alcohol intoxication for such behaviour. The packed settings of nightlife and parties combined with the effects of alcohol can induce violence through personal affronts, heightened emotions and jealousy. At the same time, nightlife settings constrain violence. That is, binge drinkers excuse misbehaviour when it is attributed to alcohol. In addition, audiences in these setting often go to great lengths to stop fights. Combined, these factors help explain why violence occurs and why it usually does not escalate. Discussion and ConclusionsThe association between alcohol and violence can be understood by more closely examining the cultural and situational context where the events occur. This link is not primarily related to the psychopharmacological properties of alcohol, but rather it is associated with situational factors and cultural norms regarding how to behave while intoxicated.   De som kommer til orde i denne boka er den moderate majoriteten av unge norske muslimer. De reflekterer om deres personlige tro, religiøse praksis, gruppetilhørigheter og særlig om synet de har på ekstreme bevegelser. Slik får vi en rikere forståelse av den motstanden mot jihadisme som er vanlig norske muslimer - omfanget, styrken, grunnene og engasjementet. Boka tar samtidig for seg at det er store forskjeller blant «vanlige» muslimer når det gjelder fortolkninger av islam, og at det er kamp mellom moderate og mer ekstreme strømninger om definisjonene av grunnleggende begreper og fortellinger. En rød tråd i boka er at det ikke nødvendigvis er politiet, kommunene eller andre offentlige instanser som er frontlinjen for bekjempelse av ekstremisme.   Hvem står bak hasjsalget ved Akerselva? Hva preger livene deres og hvilken kunnskap besitter de? Boka Street Capital – Black cannabis dealers in a white welfare state er en inngående studie av unge menn – de fleste med afrikansk bakgrunn – som selger hasj ved Akerselva i Oslo. Boka er skrevet av sosiologene Sveinung Sandberg og Willy Pedersen og utgis av Policy Press. Hasjselgerne ved Akerselva er del av en stor og kompleks illegal økonomi. De tar ofte del i slagsmål og ran og mange har rusproblemer. De mangler jobb, utdanning og ofte familie. Likevel har de ”gatekapital”; kunnskap, kompetanse og ferdigheter som gjør det mulig å mestre det krevende livet på gata. Teoretisk kan boka plasseres i tradisjonen av ”street-corner”-studier, men trekker også på Bourdieu og Foucault. Den er basert på inngående feltarbeid og intervjuer, og belyser temaer som ruskulturer, marginalitet, rasisme, vold, maskulinitet og hip-hop. Boka tar utgangspunkt i den norske boka Gatekapital, men den engelske utgaven er fullstendig nyskrevet, trekker på et bredere teoretisk rammeverk og har en rekke nye analyser.   Most stories are not inherently "good" or "bad." They are open-ended, ambiguous and shaped by the context(s) in which they are told. In the social sciences and, in particular, those with research traditions emphasizing social problems, the emphasis has tended to be--for good reasons--on those stories that promote crime and other harm. We take a different approach, emphasizing the good that stories do, primarily for storytellers and their audiences. Based on the stories of Abdi, a former gang member, and stories shared during our research of the past 20 years, we describe how stories do "good" in environments usually associated with "bad." Stories were used to cope with past trauma, create positive experiences in the present moment, encourage harm reduction, and point toward better futures. We conclude that there are good reasons to further emphasize the good that stories can do, for everyone, but not least for marginalized populations.

  Life-stories emerge from a wide variety of facts and events in a person’s life and weave a selected few of these together to make meaning in the present. They are crucial for constructing identity and influence action by establishing worldviews and a persona that the narrator will seek to confirm. Based on interviews with six incarcerated Argentinian men, we describe three main themes in these stories: a) Protecting family, especially parents; b) reconstructing an ideal past, and contrasting it with a more cynical present; and c) blaming criminal neighborhoods, friends and girlfriends for their crimes. Combining insights from narrative and psychosocial criminology, we discuss how these themes are intertwined, what function they fulfill, and the identities and masculinities they produce. We emphasize how these life-stories create coherence and unity in otherwise chaotic lives and attempt to counter stigma by defending a self that is under attack.

  Since the early 1990s, there has been a significant growth of criminal activity in Latin America and the security situation for most citizens has worsened. States that are already weak and unstable democracies have been further destabilized and weakened, due to this rise in crime. Even so, there has been relatively little research on crime in Latin America, as compared to many other parts of the world. By developing a culturally and contextually sensitive life-course criminology of Latin America, the newly started project CRIMLA aims to understand the role of family, employment, culture and the state in criminal trajectories and careers in the region. Combining criminological theory, with institutional, cultural and narrative studies, CRIMLA explores the overall research question ‘What is the best way to theorize and understand the criminal careers and life-course trajectories of Latin American offenders? Data are life-story interviews with 300 prisoners (interviewed three times each, 900 interviews) in six Latin American countries: Mexico, Honduras, Columbia, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. The presentation will focus on early findings from the project especially regarding the role of the State, the labor market, family and religion for the life-course trajectories and criminal careers of incarcerated individuals in Latin America.

  In the spring of 2020, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests shook the world. Spreading from the US, demonstrations diffused globally, especially to Europe, calling out all kinds of racism, particularly structural racism and that emanating from the police. Emotions ran high and were pivotal in igniting protests. The role of emotion in social movements has received renewed scholarly attention during the last two decades. It plays an important role at every stage of protest, but few studies have traced its part in individuals’ mobilization and demobilization over time. This study examines the role of emotion in trajectories of engagement and disengagement during the global wave of BLM protests. Based on retrospective in-depth interviews with 38 participants in BLM demonstrations in Norway, we identify the role of emotion before, during and after their participation. Our findings help explain how individual patterns of participation develop in the course of a wave of protest, and also provide insights into the consequences of the recent BLM protests in Europe.
