Purpose
The Faculty of Law has a responsibility providing jurists with knowledge of Sámi legal matters. A key objective is to support the re-establishment of courses in Sámi law as well as the continuing integration of Sámi legal perspectives across elective and compulsory courses. The thematic group is open to researchers from other educational institutions and will be a contact point between academia and private and public actors interested in Sámi legal issues.
Themes
We work across public, private and international law and welcome disciplinary contributions (criminology, sociology of law, legal philosophy, law and economics, legal history) and legal policy analysis. Current topics include human rights, Sámi aspects of, for example, environmental law, energy law, administrative law, constitutional law, property law and expropriation, children’s rights law, Sámi law, and truth and reconciliation mechanisms.
Activities
The Thematic group on Sámi Law organizes the annual Sámi Law Symposium. The group will also host and co-organize other academic events focusing on Sámi legal issues and legal research. The group will engage in dialogue with students interested in Sámi legal matters, as well as with other law faculties and external research environments.
Duration
The group was established on 1 January 2025 and will last until 31 December 2027.
