Law and technology

Various forms of technology give rise to new issues for legal research. Technology shapes the content of law, contributes to new forms of regulation, and can change the way(s) in which law is practised. This has consequences for the multitude of relationships between private actors and state actors. At the same time, law establishes limits for how technology can be applied.

About the group

The research group "law and technology" studies the possibilities and challenges that law creates for the use of technology, together with the possibilities and challenges that technology creates for understanding and applying law.

Theme / discipline

The research group takes up questions that span the traditional divisions between public law, private law, sociology of law and legal informatics. A basic premise for the group’s endeavour is that technology should be understood in a broad sense. Thus, it covers more than traditional information and communications technology (ICT). Other forms of technology, such as biotechnology and robotics, are also in focus.

Aims / ambitions

There are currently multiple academic milieux within the Law Faculty working on various technology-related matters. An important remit of the research group is to build bridges between these milieux and thus reduce the risk of them developing as isolated silos of scholarship. Accordingly, the group aims for an inclusive and broad membership that will hopefully be able to create synergies not just within the group itself but also with other academic groups outside the Faculty.

Duration

The research group is established for a five year period from 1 August 2022.
